A Multi-Pronged Set Of ??'s

There is no good way to get into this so here I go:

1) What is your criteria for picking out new music? For me, if Vinnie, Dave, Dennis or Steve is on 7 out of 10 tracks, I must own it. This is a frustrating thing for me, as I want to expand my appreciation for music and I think I might have close to everything these guys are on. Do you buy on recommendation, if so what would you recommend? Do you buy according to style? I know that many just download, but I still love CD's and plan to buy at least one every month.

On that note, I have got to recommend two albums with Peter Erskine that are, imho, must haves. Jaco Pastorius' Invitation and the Hudson Project. Peter lays it down sick on these two albums that I recently picked up.

2) I am really into Dave Garibaldi and the whole funk/soul thing. Anybody have an idea to similar music that would be a recommendation? Someone who approaches the kit like Dave G? Or, farther back Clyde Stubblefield with James Brown?

3) I am in the midst of pre-production for a new project. I am trying to go in with some new philosophies which will keep me from being frustrated. What are your philosophies when you are about to go into the studio, especially the ones that enhance your enjoyment of that time? I do not drink, do drugs or drink coffee to excess? Ok, I don't drink or do drugs!

4) Someone posted some mp3's from a Sting Chicago Session a while back. If anyone is able, could you please post the song, "Mad About You" from that album? Just a humble request?

Hudson project is a great disc.
Criteria for buying? Sometimes for me I buy on recommendation but not always, can't trust everyone's opinion.
For funk like Garibaldi? The new Oz Noy live cd is really good, Carlock and Anton Fig doing some nice grooves, you can get it at itunes. How about the Meters?...that's the stuff, Cissy Strut.
For me I listen to everything, the new Notorious Cherry Bombs disc is a great listen, Eddie Bayers, Vince Gill........this was Larrie Londins band and there is a hidden track with Larrie on it, I just found a nice live show at Sharing the Groove from an Adrian Belew tour Larrie did in 83....

As for recomendations for albums, I recomend an album called "Tribute to Jeff, David Garfield and friends play tribute to Jeff Porcaro". This album has every stlye of music on it, and features such drummers as vinnie, weckl, gadd, abe laboriel, erskine, keltner, and anyone else you can imagine. This CD is a must have for any drummers library.

Yeah, that Tribute to Jeff is good. But when you look at the imposing list of drummers/players on there, don't think that it's an "I'm gonna bust my best Vinnie move" type of record, because that's not what it's about...it's nice, pocket stuff, in honor of Jeff, no doubt. But it has a scant few 'bust' moments. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Check the net for some of the funkier/pocket Zoro is on, too.

Garib is da "shedd."
So is the Chambers' funky stuff...

Hello All-
Thank you guys for the responses thus far. Especially Dazzler!! Thank you so much! I will e-mail you an Mp3 of Vinnie playing with John David Webster that I think you will like. I am unable to post as you have so kindly done, but hopefully, that will suffice.

Adam Deitch. I see Scofield's albums in Barnes and Noble all the time. I will check it out. Thank you Randy for you recommendation. A friend of mine, mentioned a group called White Trash. The drummer was Bobby Ramirez. Anyone heard of that band? I think he mentioned someone name Edgar Winter in relation, if that rings a bell.

So, how about some good recording philosophies? I have begun to work on these for myself. One example is to stop putting pressure on myself to make something magical happen. I want to sound and play like the big boys, but if I put that pressure on myself, I limit what I can do. Any other good recording philosophy that you all have?

When I buy music, it's usually by
the drummer, I admit. However, I
am starting now to shift.

You all know how I have been list-
ening to Latin music but it's not
just for listening. I'm looking
for Latin music that I can work
with - to have influence me and
I mean directly, on the drums.

I think that it might be an idea
to start choosing music and other
players to help you expand into
other areas.

Just something to think about.

I go for recommendations, if the
person making the rec is special
or if I know something about the
rec already.
